come annunciato il giorno prima dal nostro custode, la mattina nell’ostello di marsala \u00e8 iniziata splendidamente.<\/p>\n

Il custode, con autentico grembiule da cucina, ci ha accolto nel refettorio con caff\u00e8 di mokka e biscottini delle monache.<\/p>\n

Buonissimi. Ancora pi\u00f9 buoni al pensiero che con quei pochi euro di colazione le stavamo aiutando a mandare avanti il loro progetto.<\/p>\n

Appena finito il caff\u00e8 il custode ci ha fatto una bella sorpresa. Siamo andati con lui alla porta del convento, unico punto dove le suore hanno un qualche contatto con il pubblico attraverso una grata ed attraverso la \u201cruota\u201d.<\/p>\n

As the guardian told us the day before, the day began wonderfully in the Mazara\u2019s hostel.<\/em><\/p>\n

The guardian, with an authentic kitchen apron, greeted us in the refectory with mokka coffee and biscuits of the nuns.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yummy. Even more good with the thought that those few euro for the breakfast were helping to run their projects.<\/em><\/p>\n

Just after the coffee the keeper made \u200b\u200bus a nice surprise. We went with him to the door of the convent, the only point where the sisters have some contact with the public through a grate and through the “wheel”.<\/em><\/p>\n

La \u201cruota\u201d \u00e8 un meccanismo molto antico. Me lo ricordo nei libri di storia, che dicevano che i bambini non voluti venivano messi sulla ruota dei conventi, nella speranza di offrirgli una vita migliore. Quella del convento di clausura comunque \u00e8 leggermente diversa, in quanto viene usata per porvi i prodotti per i pasti delle suore, od i biscotti che le suore amorevolmente preparano e vendono al pubblico.<\/p>\n

Nel nostro caso su quella ruota abbiamo trovato la chiave della chiesa. Dovete sapere infatti che essendo il convento di San Michele un convento di clausura, la sua chiesa non \u00e8 aperta come le normali chiese. Essa viene usata dalle monache, ed \u00e8 aperta solo per la messa domenicale, ma non vi si celebrano battesimi o comunioni o matrimoni.<\/p>\n

The “wheel” is a very old mechanism. I remember it in the history books, saying that unwanted children were placed on the wheel of the monasteries, hoping to give him a better life. That of the cloistered convent, however, is slightly different in that it is used to exchange the products for the meals of the sisters, or the cookies that the sisters lovingly prepare and sell to the public.<\/p>\n

In our case on that wheel we have found the key of the church. You should know that, since the monastery of San Michele is a cloistered convent, the church is not open as normal churches. It is used by the nuns, and is only open for Sunday Mass, but there can\u2019t be celebrated baptisms or first communions or weddings.<\/p>\n

In ogni caso noi avevamo la chiave. Appena entrati non abbiamo potuto non meravigliarci. La chiesa \u00e8 meravigliosa. Ad una navata con transetto, ed il presbiterio con un\u2019abside dai decori dorati appena ristrutturati dalle suore con i loro risparmi. Sopra il portone di entrata si trova l\u2019organo con il coro, imponente quanto decadente.<\/p>\n

Di questa chiesa ci hanno colpito alcune cose:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0 il pavimento ora appare tutto marrone, ma nei punti pi\u00f9 riparati dalle scarpe dei fedeli si possono scorgere i decori blu e gialli con cui erano ornate le piastrelle. Un colpo d\u2019occhio.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0 lungo tutte le pareti ci sono statue di donne molto belle. La versione ufficiale \u00e8 che rappresentano le virt\u00f9 cristiane. Quella ufficiosa, che abbiamo origliato dalla guida di un altro gruppo di visitatori, \u00e8 che l\u2019artista che ha decorato la chiesa amava cosi tanto le donne, da avervi letteralmente tappezzato le chiese di Mazara con le loro statue, dandogli poi il nome di virt\u00f9. Possiamo dire che era un buongustaio. In ogni caso tutte le figure sono angeliche, eleganti e misteriose.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0 nella parte pi\u00f9 alta della chiesa si trovano delle finestre con delle grate di legno. E lo spazio stesso per il coro \u00e8 coperto da un\u2019enorme grata. Le grate nascondono gli spazi riservati alle monache. Oggi queste seguono la messa e le preghiere dai primi banchi. Una volta ci\u00f2 non era permesso e per non essere viste seguivano la messa da dietro le grate. Poco prima dell\u2019altare il transetto veniva chiuso per permettere alle monache di scendere nella chiesa senza essere viste al momento della comunione. Il coro infine era il loro regno. Le monache si specializzavano nei canti gregoriani ed animavano la messa. La grata del coro \u00e8 molto pi\u00f9 grande ed imponente di quelle delle stanze e del corridoio laterali.<\/p>\n

Altri due particolari:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0 a met\u00e0 navata si apre un palco. Da l\u00ec i principi normanni (familiari delle suore pi\u00f9 facoltose) seguivano la messa.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0 l\u2019affresco del soffitto ha un dettaglio in 3d. Il braccio di uno dei diavoli esce dalla parete ed \u00e8 fatto di bronzo, o legno, effettivamente non ricordo bene \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

Purtroppo molte cose in questa chiesa risentono del passare del tempo ed i fondi per ristrutturare sono ridotti. Il custode auspicava un ritorno al mecenatismo.<\/p>\n

In any case, we had the key. Upon entering we must be surprised. The church is wonderful. A nave with transept and the presbytery with an apse decorated by gilded recently renovated by the nuns with their savings. Above the main entrance is the organ with the choir, as imposing as decadent.<\/p>\n

Of this church a few things struck us :<\/em><\/p>\n

– The floor now looks all brown, but in the more sheltered part from the shoes of the faithful, one can still see the decorations of the tiles in blue and yellow.<\/em><\/p>\n

– All along the walls there are statues of very beautiful women. The official version is that they represent the Christian virtues. The unofficial one, that we discovered\u00a0 overhearing the guide of another group of visitors, is that the artist who decorated the churches of the city\u00a0 loved so much women, to literally paper the churches of Mazara with their statues, then giving it the name of virtue . We can say that he had some taste. In any case, all figures are angelic, elegant and mysterious.<\/em><\/p>\n

– In the upper part of the church are the windows with wooden gratings. And the space itself for the choir is covered by a huge grille. The grates hide the spaces reserved for nuns. Today the nuns follow the mass and prayers from the banks. Once it was not allowed to saw them and they followed the mass behind the grate. Shortly before the altar the transept was closed to allow the nuns to go down into the church without being seen at the time of communion. The choir finally was their kingdom. The nuns were specialized in Gregorian chants and animated the mass. The grating of the choir is much bigger and more impressive than those of the rooms and the corridor on the sides.<\/em><\/p>\n

Two other details:<\/em><\/p>\n

– In the middle of the nave opens a stage. From there, the Norman princes (the wealthiest families of the sisters) followed the mass.<\/em><\/p>\n

– The fresco on the ceiling has detail in 3d. The arm of one of the devils cames out of the wall and is made of bronze or wood, actually I do not remember \ud83d\ude09<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, many things in this church are affected by the passage of time and funds to renovate are reduced. The guardian called for a return to patronage.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dopo tanta arte abbiamo deciso di prendere un po\u2019 d\u2019aria con una passeggiata sul lungo mare: fresco e suggestivo , come molte altre cose in questa citt\u00e0<\/p>\n

After so much art we decided to take a little bit of air with a stroll along the sea: fresh and charming, like many other things in this city.<\/em><\/p>\n

Il pomeriggio siamo tornati in stazione e con calma abbiamo preso il treno per Marsala, dove c\u2019erano alcuni amici ad aspettarci, compreso il cane Bal\u00f9.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon we returned to the station and calmly took the train to Marsala, where there were some friends waiting for us, including the dog Bal\u00f9.<\/em><\/p>\n

La prima sera a marsala ci ha regalato il primo di una serie di bellissimi tramonti: cielo e nuvole azzurro pastello impreziosite dal rosa e dall\u2019arancio del sole calante. Il tutto con lo skyline delle isole Egadi all\u2019orizzonte. Da film.<\/p>\n

The first night in marsala gave us the first of a series of beautiful sunsets: blue sky and clouds decorated with pastel pink and orange by the setting sun. All with the skyline of the Egadi islands on the horizon. Like in a movie.<\/em><\/p>\n
